Plant Cell Wall – Structure & Function Plant Cell

Introduction of Plant Cell WallA cell wall is a rigid (thick) layer of polysaccharides that are lying outside the plasma membrane of the plant’s cells, fungi, and bacteria. In the algae and higher plants, cell wall consists mainly of cellulose.Plant and bacterial cell membranes are enclosed by a thick cell wall. Cell wall provides the cell both mechanical support, protection.

Structure of Bacterial Cell Wall

The bacterial cell is surrounded by a wall that fluctuates chemically from the cell wall of plants. The bacterial cell wall comprises a rigid framework of polysaccharide chain cross-connected with short peptide chains. Bacterial cell walls outer surface is covered with lipopolysaccharide. In some species of bacteria extensions of the cell wall is present that is called pili. In many bacterial species, the cell wall is surrounded by an additional structure called a capsule. The cell wall and capsule deliberate the figure and form of the bacterium. Capsule act as a physical barricade to the cell membrane. In the absence of cell wall and capsule is mechanically brittle and the bacteria would rupture.

Plant Cell WallStructure of Plant Cell Wall

The cell wall of plants consists of thick polysaccharides comprising structure proximately surrounding the plasma membrane. In multicellular plants, the plasma membrane of neighboring cells is detached by the presence of these walls. Head-to-head plant cells have their walls fused together by a layer called the middle lamella. The cell wall of plants assists both as a protective and a support unit for the plant.

Functions of Plant Cell wall

  1. Cell wall defends bacteria against puffiness in hypotonic media.
  2. The cell wall is absorbent and allows only small molecules to pass.
  3. Cell wall also contains pili. Pili are hollow outgrowth structures. Pili serve as a site to transfer DNA for sexual conjugation.Plant Cell Wall
  4. Cell wall gives the cell a fixed shape and structure.
  5. Cell wall provides mechanical support.
  6. Cell wall protects contradiction of infection and mechanical stress.
  7. Cell wall separates the interior portion of the cell from the outer environment of the cell.
  8. Cell wall enables transportation of substances and information from the cell insides to the outside and vice versa.
  9. Cell wall also provide assistances in osmotic-regulation.
  10. Cell wall prevents water loss.
  11. The biological and biochemical bustle of the cell wall assists in cell-cell communication.
  12. Cell wall prevents the cell from shattering due to turgor pressure.
